Denn obers: LS: 'Sott hebben' meynt G:'Glück haben', E: ,to be lucky'.

English:

Dear Lowlanders,

back to our linguistical roots:

with my neighbours those days I had a talk about the LS: 'Sottje", G:
'Schornsteinfeger', E: 'chimney sweeper'. A word scarcesly used in our days.

This word is also used for G: 'Ruß', 'Rückstände', ,Verunreinigung',
verwandt an ,Sud', ,Satz' (beim Kaffee), E: ,residue', ['coffee] grounds'.
'Sott' I presume to be cognate with LS: 'Sood', G: 'Brunnen', E: 'soda
[water]'.

But- then: LS: 'Sott hebben' also means G:'Glück haben', E: ,to be lucky'.

What could be the origin of this transfigurated meaning? As far as I know
the chminey sweeper is good for bringing luck in other, foreign (and perhaps
not so foreign) cultures, too.

Greutens/Regards

Johannes "Jonny" Meibohm
