Anent the uisage 'budgies' for 'aa wee birds', I wis maist
interestit ti hear that, for I hae a neibour frein here bydes in Blackford
(awa in the mids o Scotland) brocht up in Glesca, an he aye cries aathing in
atween a wran an a doo a 'budgie'. I haed thocht it a mere jocosity afore I
haerd yer news aboot it.

That's unco!  Did it come frae the name of the Australian papingo-lik bird
or frae Dutch/Flemish _botje_ '(tur-)bot', '(hali)but' > 'wee lad',
'gorblin', 'loun' (brocht til Scotland by the Flemings?) ... meanin a "wee
thingie"?
