Dear Gavin

Subject: Lexicon

> Many of you will be familiar with the traditional Scots song "Cam ye o'er
> frae France?"

I wasn't, & thanks very much for it.
>
> Cam ye o'er frae France?
> Cam ye down by Lunnon?
> Saw ye Geordie Whelps
> And his bonny woman?
> Were ye at the place
> Ca'd the Kittle Housie?
> Saw ye Geordie's grace
> Riding on a goosie?

An Afrikaans word for 'tickle' or 'stimulate' is 'Kittel', which is very
seldom used out of a sexual context, for that very reason. I apologise for
writing this, offering my excuses on philological grounds: We say 'die
kittelaar' for 'the clitoris'.

> A net search shows that "Kittle Housie" is variously glossed as "a
brothel",

Yrs,
Mark
