Maybe the way the people in the city speak has led to the exploding of
the toads? Maybe they were expecting Platt or Hochdeutsch but were
just so surprised to hear something totally different that they
exploded. And the article I read said it was in an upscale
neighbourhood of Berlin.

Mark,

I just checked.

It is indeed in Hamburg, specifically in Altona, described as an "upscale"
part of Hamburg in the English language press.  Actually, it's on
Stationsstraße next to the Volkspark, which belongs to Bahrenfeld, as far as
I know, perhaps now considered a part of Altona (which in itself isn't all
that upscale).

What Ingmar said about the toads and crows is apparently the case.  Sorry.
No linguistic link here ...
