I hope so, too. Whereabouts in Ireland - north and south - did you (or are
you planning to) visit? There is a wealth of linguistic interest here, no
doubt about it.

I read that book on the history of ABN - Dutch formal standard language -
a few months ago, but I believe the so-called myths that "are broken" in
it weren't myths at all. It claims that the Southern Dutch of the Flemish
immigrants who came to Holland à masse in the sixteenth century had little
influence on the formation of ABN, contrary to common believes, but they
overlooked many basic words of Flemish hintergrund in ABN, like <u> vs
<jou>, <werpen> vs <gooien>, <schoon> vs <mooi> and many more, which have
a formal connotation in Dutch ears but are normal in Belgium.
