Hello, Lowlanders!

As many of you may already be aware and others may not be, some of the email
service providers, both free and paid, now offer, in addition to real-time
or same-time (chat) correspondence, free worldwide telephony. Among the
free services that do so are Yahoo and Google.

Google is now offering Gmail (http://mail.google.com/), a beta version of a
free email service with loads and loads of extras and storage capacity, also
a photo album add-on. It is officially "by invitation only." You need to
have a mobile telephone to sign up or must use another person's mobile phone
for this purpose -- but this is only for signing up, i.e., confirmation, and
the promise is to keep out junk and any other sort of botheration. So far
my experiences with it have been positive ones.

The reason why I am mentioning this is that I believe that many of you who
have formed their own little offline "cliques" over time might like to use
the free long-distance phone service to kick their communication up to the
level of occasional talks.

I've tried it with our Kenneth (between Groningen and Seattle). I was just
amazed how very clear his voice sounded even though I was using a dial-up
modem that day. Unfortunately, there is something wrong with my microphone
connection (not with my microphones), so I wasn't able to reciprocate, and
we had to resort to written chat. (If anyone feels like helping me
troubleshoot this, I'd be eternally grateful.)

Have fun!
Reinhard/Ron
