It is interesting that 'profiency' is not known in the dictionaries but
'proficiency'. If you use the search engine Google 'profiency' has about
38,000 results, 'proficiency' has about 31,600,000.

This reminds me of the days when I was in the hospital after giving birth to
my oldest daughter. She was very premature and in an incubator, so I got the
chance to use the shower room when everybody else was occupied with their
babies. So there I was, under the shower, when two Turkish cleaning ladies
suddenly burst into the room and stood right in front of me, very
embarrassed, because they hadn't expected anyone and thought this would be a
good time to clean. I was just as startled as they were, and, without much
thinking, blurted out one of the few Turkish phrases I know: "Hos geldiniz"
(hope I spelled this right), which means "Welcome". They laughed their heads
off, and would still greet me in the street years later... :-)

Utz,

"Profiency" was a typing error for "proficiency."  Sorry I sent you on a 
wild goose chase.

(I got new glasses and am still getting used to looking at computer screens 
with them.)

Pretty darn close:
Hoş geldiniz
(with a little hook thingy underneath the "s" for the "sh" sound)

I bet they did.  It's perhaps a bit funnier because the literal meaning can 
be construed as something like "Happy you came" or "Nice of you to stop by" 
(hoş < Persian  خوش _xoš_ 'pleasant', _geldiniz_ 'you came').
