Right, and not even so long ago we've witnessed mass expulsions of an
archaic type.

In Northern Ghana expulsions have occurred on a cyclical basis over many
centuries.
People in some fertile riverine areas are gradually forced back into densely
populated, water scarce, inland zones not by any human persecution but by a
small black fly, Simulium damnsosum, vector of Onchocerciasis or 'river
blindness'. During my years studying this awful insect I explored riverine
bushland where ruins of earlier settlements were commonplace. Poor folks are
pushed back until pressure from existing populations and food shortages
forces them back to the river banks,
a dance of death and suffering that still goes on.

Thanks, Tom.

Not to mention what's currently going on in Darfour.
