Wonka's experimental candies is called the Everlasting Gobstopper. "Gob" is
another word for "mouth".

Kevin and all, could gob be a reversal of a form like bok or boca from a
Romance language, or is that just my mind groping in vain for a connection
to Spanish, my second mother tongue?

Moin alltohoop,

in dat Polsche, daar hebbt se 'chapnąć' un dat heet 'snappen' orrer ook
'klauen'.

In Meckelnborg warrt denn ook Göps(ch) sachs fakener bruukt as bi us. Ik
heff dat mien Leefdag nienich hört. In dat Plattdeutsch-hochdeutsche
Wörterbuch vun Renate Herrmann-Winter steiht denn ook in:

"*Göps, Göpsch* f. Menge, die man in zwei aneinander gelegte hohle Hände
nehmen kann: /´n Göps vull Stickelbeern /eine Hand voll Stachelbeeren;
übertr. die Hände selbst:
/nimm dien Göpsen weg! Wat hei ierst inne Göpsen hett, is so gaut as
weg. /Gericht: /Meckelbörger Göpsklümp mit Speck /Klöße aus Mehl,
gekochten Kartoffeln, geschnittenem Weißbrot und Gewürzen".

I presumed "tram" was cognate with Eng. "trim" - i.e., to cut a thin line 
through or off, as evidenced by the lines on which trams travel through 
streets.
