With my zoology background I must disagree, all animals have their
own wondrous beauty.
Someone once said "The true philosopher can see beauty in a
hippopotamus"
As to frogs their subtle nuances of colour are symphonies in their
own right.

In Austria there is this dictum of women about man: "Alles was ein Mann
schöner ist wie ein Aff', ist ein Luxus!" (don't know how to translate it
correctly in E, maybe: "All what makes a man look better than a monkey, is
luxury!", and I try in D: "Alles wat een man is mooier dan een aap, is
luxe!"). I like this old-fashioned notion, modern women are much more
critical today, aren't they?

Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een leelijk ding.

d.w.z. ‘fraaie kleederen en sieraden kunnen een leelijk mensch niet
bevallig
maken, of: pracht en praal verheffen niemand tot den beschaafden stand’;
Ndl. Wdb. I, 527. De zegswijze is eene navolging van het lat. simia est
simia et si aurea gestet insignia. Bij Servilius, 78 lezen wij Een simme
blyft altyd een simme; Spieghel, 288: Een aap is een aap, al droeghze een
goude huif (zoo ook bij Cats, 424); De Brune, 240:

 Een simm' in 't purper blijft een simm,
 Ghelijck zy was, zoo blift-ze slim'.
Tuinman I, 89: Een aap blyft een aap, al droeg hy een gouden ring. Het naast
aan onzen vorm komt Sewel, 20: Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, 't is
evenwel een leelyk ding.

In het Nederduitsch luidt de spreekw.: 'n Ape is un blift 'n Ape, un dröge
he auk sidene Schlîpklêer un goldene Kîen un Spangen (zie Eckart, 7);
in het
Friesch: in aep bliuwt in aep al het er in rôk oan en in prûk op; zie W.
