I was just reading through the Wikipedia entry on Burghers
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgher_people) the other day, actually,
having reached it from the main Sri Lanka entry. Apparently the ethnic
identity was legally defined in 1883 as a paternal inheritance - i.e.,
one's father has to have European ancestry. Only Sri Lankans with
European surnames (Portuguese or Dutch, generally) are considered
Burghers.
