Dag Reinhard,

Since my current employer has to cut down on all expenses, he needs to take
people off the payroll. So a couple of months ago, when I finally got my
opportunity to discuss my four month of linguistic research in South Africa, he
declined my request for unpaid leave. He was hoping that I would give up my job
and go for my academic career. That is impossible for a provider like me. These
have been some very disappointing months. Money talks, they say.

So now I will go to South Africa for only two weeks, where I will collect some
files and articles in the linguistic departments. Hopefully I will come up with a
new subject for my thesis, now without field work and with hardly any new
information. This also means that I do not need a voice recorder with which I
could record accents and the Wren story. I'm very sorry.

As my relatives on the farm do not have computers - let alone microphones and
sound cards - I do not see any opportunity for them to record their accents at
least for the Anniversary pages. But I hope I will have some other ways to
register the linguistic facets of the people I know here and abroad.

Best regards,

Marcel.

I understand, Marcel, and feel sorry about your situation.

Hang in there, man!

Reinhard/Ron
