No it isn't the case in English - I think you're trying too hard here, Ron!

A "three-man crew" is nothing to do with unmarked men, it's just the
normal way to form compound adjectives, eg:

Three-man crew.
Five-bar gate.
Twenty-one gun salute.
Two-horse town.
Twelve-volume encyclopaedia.
Six-part series.

You're absolutely right, Sandy.  I was trying way too hard to make things fit and
was ignoring the obvious in the process.  Goes to show what can happen.  Or is it
just me?  (Please say "no"!)
