Hi Sandy,
That is very interesting. Some months ago you tried to explain to me how
sign language and spoken language were different. I would have thought that
sign language is not only "let your fingers do the talking", but that you
must also use different parts of your brain to offer your thoughts. You must
be so familiar with both modes of communication that they both can run in
the background at the same time. But what happens when the dog scratches
your knee to let you know that he wants to go out? What an interesting
puzzlement! Jacqueline

Ron and Karl-Heinz,

Thanks for the insight into Austrian language. I certainly wasn't criticising
the use of the local dialect; I also love to hear these things carrying on. I was
just commenting that I couldn't understand it! I notice a few places used the
written form in advertising - an example was a hat shop in Hintertuxen with the
slogan "Det is mei Hit!". It looked surprisingly "lowlands" to me!

An Austrian I knew years ago in South Africa told me that in the area he came
from some of the High German sound shifts seem to have been missed - "piep"
instead of "pfeif" for example. I can't remember where he came from though!

sien soos in die Namakwaland wat die blomme het en ook die mooi natuurskoon.

Ria,
Vir my was Namakwaland die mooiste gedeelte van Suid Afrika - en Suid Afrika is a
baie, baie mooie land!
