Hi Ben:
Well, you're probably on to something there.  However, in certain Midwest US
areas cot and caught are homonyms due to the vowel being like a in father.

Now, in my own idiolect, offal and awful would be pronounced the same,
except the vowel for me is like the vowel in bought.
