Dear people,

Mark Brooks message about the pronunciation of 'katzenjammer' reminded me of 
a South African bit of info for you.  It might be off-topic, but if I don't 
mention it now, I might forget to mention it altogether.

In South African English, the name of the Volkswagen car-brand is pronounced 
with the voicesless velar fricative /x/, with a distinctly Afrikaans 
pronunciation, whereas the rest of the speakers' pronunciation is not 
Afrikaans: /folkswɒ:x at n/.
Interestingly, English speakers in South Africa assumed that this German 
word _Volkswagen_ should be pronounced as if it were an Afrikaans word. The 
pronunciation and the occurrence of the common surname 'Cruywagen' must have 
influenced this development, I think.
