And The fact that Celtic Christianity held sway in pockets all over the
country a long time after the arrival of Augustine is also probably the
reason why we here in England were allowed ( by the Church) to keep the
word "Wednesday" whereas the Germans had to have it removed and changed to
Mittwoch.
A society can tolerate names that have little or no meaning but those that
still conjure up meaning / power/ influence must be wiped out of use.

From what I have read I don't think that there is really very much
evidence for the nature of pre-Christian gods, let alone for the nature
of peoples' relationships with them. Most of the evidence is
archaeological or from a Christian point of view. The fact that England
was Christianised long before the Anglo-Saxons became dominant is
probably as good an explanation for the more rapid conversion when
compared to the Norse, no? I don't think the Anglo-Saxons wiped the
slate clean in the so-called 'invasion'.

    Yours, Paul Tatum

Overall, I tend to agree, though another point of Branton's was that while people
gave up Woden and Thunor for Jesus, most weren''t particularly "Christianised";
assorted spooks imps elves and sprites were much a part of their day-to-day life.
This was probably widespread; a 19th C Danish minister on Odense called his
flock "pagans sympathetic to Christians".

In short "gods" were for important people, we'll stick with Boggles and Boggarts
we believe in.

Paul
