From: Tom Mc Rae [t.mcrae at uq.net.au]
Subject: Linguistic Misunderstanding

A query from someone about Scots Gaelic from someone on another List led me to
recall.....
There was an unfortunate incident around 1955 when Territorial Army (like your
CMF) soldiers from the Western Islands had an end of camp function in
an upper room of a Scottish Border pub in Peebles. Arrested en-masse after a
major altercration involving glasses and bottles being thrown out of the windows
followed by the landlord of the pub, and all three members of the Peebles
Constabulary. Fairly short drop thank heaven so nobody was injured.
Soldiers then got somewhat disconcerted and defenestrated the tables and chairst
then, FINALE.
Out went the upright piano !
Cut and dried case of riotous assembly ? Judge Ye not Dear Readers.
When arraigned before the courts the landlord stated the trouble started when he
started abusing them for using filthy language. Their Commanding Officer
then informed the Court that his boys spoke only the Gaelic which the pub owner
thought was swearing. Case was dismissed and damage paid for ex Regimental funds.
Classic example of getting off Scot free. Regiment was The Seaforths, traditional
regiment for Clan Macrae.
We can be a wild bunch at times.
