There is a very good history of appreciation of the Dutch heritage of
America called _Holland Mania_. The author (Stott, I think) argues that
in their search for a non-British past, the Dutch offered 19th and early
20th century Americans a more comfortable alternative than Spanish,
African, Native, French, etc.
