Subject: Resources

Lesley kindly drew our attention to a new online Scots language resource via
a BBC announcement:

** Scots 'mither tongue' goes online **
An archive of the Scots language becomes available all over the world thanks
to a comprehensive new website.

The direct link: http://www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk/

It's the Scottish Corpus of Texts & Speech.

I've checked it out a bit. Oh, boy! This looks like a really nice one. It
looks as though we are amassing a nice bit of online Scots material together
with our Sandy's literature site (www.scotstext.org/) and a couple of
dictionaries, including our Andy's (www.scots-online.org/dictionary/), and
Andy's other pages (www.scots-online.org/).

It's been helping me greatly, because it allows me to read various sorts of
Scots texts and thereby gradually acquire at least a passive repository of
words and expressions. I recommend it. The other day I thought I had passed
a milestone when only at third reading I realized that from an
(American) English
point of view the following popular song (found at Sandy's site:
www.scotstext.org/makars/traditional_songs/volume_1.asp#cockupyourbeaver) is
likely to raise a few eyebrows.

When first my dear Johny cam to this toun,
He haed a blue bunnet, it wanted the croun;
But nou he haes gotten a hat an a feather,
Hey, my Johny lad, cock up your beaver.
Cock up your beaver, cock up your beaver,
Hey, my Johny lad, cock up your beaver;
Cock up your beaver, an cock it na wrang,
We'll a' to England or it be lang.

I wish we had something comparable to sites of that caliber for other
non-dominant Lowlands languages.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
