I don't know how many other English (and even a few Welsh?) place names
I might be pronouncing incorrectly, that sort of knowledge just seems to
come on a need-to-know basis - though for all I know this sort of thing
might be taught in English schools.

The basic rule about local place names is that you always get them wrong.
Locals can then correct you with an implied "I thought everybody knew that,
we locals must just be so much cleverer than outsiders". It's the only
thing approaching specialist knowledge many of them have, so you should
mispronounce local names even if you know the correct version, to make them
feel good.
