Sloppiness?

I have never seen the "ect" version. It is interesting that et cetera means
"and the rest, so on and so forth" and was meant as an abbreviation (I
always understood it to have been a legal document writer's invention to
save repetitious handwriting) which makes it ironic that the phrase itself
suffers abbreviation to "etc" or the even shorter "&c.".
