Beste Ron,

You wrote:

So I take it this group is related to German *Kot*, Old English *cwēad*, and
Old Frisian *quād* 'excrement', 'dung', 'filth', which goes back to
Indo-European **gṷeu-* 'dung' > Sanskrit घूतः *ghūtaḥ*. Interestingly, I
can't find any cognates in the Low German group.

Important word in Dutch morals, opposite of "goed":

"kwaad" (D), "kååt" (B, L): evil, bad, wicked.

As in "kååpèt" (B): rascal, rogue < "kwa-pert", where "kwa" is short for
"kwaad" and "pert" (= trick, prank) ~ "pretty" (E), which in turn < "prætt"
(Old English, trick, wile).

Elsewhere, the word can be heard as: "kwapoets" and "kwapits".

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx

Thanks, Luc.

Hmmm ... so you really think that *kwaad* is related to that group of words,
huh? I can't get to my Dutch etymological dictionary at the moment.

It's also used in some Low Saxon dialects (often spelled *quaad'*, *quaat*or
*qua(a)*), and it was still used a lot in Middle Saxon.

Kumpelmenten,
Reinhard/Ron
