Subject: Art

Dear Lowlanders,

A fine on-line gallery of the works of Hans Holbein the Younger is located
here:

http://www.museumsyndicate.com/artist.php?artist=410

These may be the best digital versions of the picture available. The only
drawback of the index page is that it keeps taking you to the top when you
hit the return button. You'll have to work around that.

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) is predominantly known for his fine
portraits, most of them of well-known historical figures of Germany, the
Dutch-speaking area and Britain. Holbein emigrated from Germany
(specifically from Bavaria via Switzerland) to England and became an
extremely sought-after portrait artist there. He worked at the royal court
and in various other houses of nobility. He also painted the likenesses of
Flemish, Dutch and North German (Hanseatic) merchants. Furthermore, he
painted a touching portrait of Christina of Denmark Duchess of Milan (
http://www.museumsyndicate.com/item.php?item=10543) you declined Henry
VIII's marriage proposal on which she commented that she'd rather keep her
head.

It is thanks to this artist that we get a real idea what various famous (and
some not so famous) people really looked like. When you compare several
pictures of the same person (even at different ages) you will notice that
there is true consistency of features, which leads me to believe that they
are indeed very life-like.

site):

Enjoy!
