Well, they caused the Roman Empire to fall... that's well enough described.

As with all historical matters, it may not be that simple.  Did the
invasions cause the Empire to fall, or was the Empire failing, encouraging
the invasions?  Just how much "slaughter" actually happened? The so-called
"barbarian" incursions covered many centuries, and the descendent of the
first waves were part and parcel of the Roman Empire by the time the later
ones arrived.  The Ostrogoths crossed the Danube initially not to conquer
Rome, but to seek its protection from the Huns.  Visigoths and Franks were a
major component of the Roman army that defeated the Huns at Chalons. The
Roman general Stilicho, a key player in resisting Germanic attacks, was
himself a Vandal.  It's always a complex weave, never a single thread.
