From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at yahoo.com>
Subject: History

As many of you know, while not official parts of the Middle-Saxon-speaking
Hanseatic Trading League, there are several British cities in which the
League had representation:

   - Principal *Kontor*:
      - London Steelyard
   - Subsidiary *Kontore*:
      - Berwick upon Tweed
      - Boston
      - Edinburgh
      - Hull
      - Ipswich
      - King's Lynn
      - Newcastle
      - Great Yarmouth
   - Hanseatic Community:
      - Aberdeen

I know that there is at least a commemorative plaque at the site of the
London Steelyard (http://tinyurl.com/2mat26), and there is a Hanseatic
warehouse in King's Lynn (http://tinyurl.com/38nw7u).

I wonder if some of you have knowledge of historic sites in any of the other
cities. It doesn't have to be a remnant; an exact place would be of interest
too. I think if would be nice if we could list these and present them on a
dedicated page for the travels project (http://lowlands-l.net/travels/).

Of course we could do the same for cities in other countries.

Please send any relevant information to me (sassisch at yahoo.com) under the
subject line "Hansa," and please let me know if you do or do not want to be
listed as a contributor. It would be great if you had any visual material
that you would be able and willing to share.

We could make a special section dedicated to migration and travel/trading
routes, something like "On Old-Time Trails." I could imagine other such
pages, dedicated for instance to Dutch speakers in Britain, and to Dutch
speakers and/or Scots in the east (Germany, Poland, Kaliningrad, the Baltic
States, the Nordic Countries), or to Huguenot settlements throughout the
Lowlands. This might give some people with historical leanings and
genealogical hobbies ideas for travel themes and routes, and we'd promote
knowledge of old Lowlands connections, put the Lowlands on the map. The same
goes for Lowlandic settlements in the "New" World, especially those that
retain some of their old character and/or consciousness.

By the way, the travels pages are frequently visited, *all* of them, and I
have received some feedback from their visitors, some with useful input.
People seem to really appreciate them, and they are enticing many of them to
visit our other presentations and some to join LL-L. So we've got a good
thing going there and ought to continue working on it. Please send any
contributions to me (sassisch at yahoo.com). Help of various sorts is
available.

Thanks in anticipation!

Reinhard/Ron
