To be a bit of a pedant, the lack of independent articles is a common
feature of conservative North Germanic dialects in general, and not
just Icelandic. In addition to Icelandic it is a common feature of
many peripheral Swedish dialects (at least as defined by Östen Dahl),
including Dalecarlian dialects such as Elfdalian (if you can even call
them "Swedish" to begin with, even though traditional North Germanic
dialects differ extremely greatly in general). Of course, this only
goes further to show that they are likely a consequence of the
influence of Low Saxon upon North Germanic.
