Hello Laglanners,

Finally, finally, I have caught our Ron out on a limb. I shall now commence
shaking said limb as follows:

Ron would have it that, in Gothic, *faihu *meant only fee or money. Not
true. It meant primarily *cattle*, and the other meanings came later. See
Koebler, Streitberg, Tunstall, or any other dictionary compilations.

Interestingly, the English *fee *also means quality or nature of title to
land: e.g., fee simple, fee tail (mix of English and Norman French: *tailee,
*meaning curtailed or of a finite nature.

While on the subject, would anyone out there in Lowlandsland weigh in with a
reading on the following:

English "*in cahoots with" *is a pejorative meaning closely conspiratorial.
Some have opined that it originated in Quebecois from a word for "hut",
"trapper's cabin". I disagree, particularly because of the Gothic phrase, "*in
gahugds mith", *meaning "of a common or shared thought or idea". The
*ga- *prefix
was, as in modern Germanic languages, a collective, as in Gemeente or
Gesellschaft. The stem element, *hugds-, *meant "thought". We see the same
word in *Hugin*, one of Odin's two ravens, *Hugin *and *Munin, *meaning
"thought" and "memory".

Arthur
