Thanks Orville,

I'll carry on with Drents, but I haven't lived in the Drenthe town of
Zuidwolde for about 22 years. That's why I was rather surprised to find
out that people of my generation (under 40) still have Low Saxon as their
common, everyday language, instead of Standard Dutch or Low Saxon coloured
Dutch. In the places I lived after I left Drenthe, i.e. Brabant and around
Arnhem (Gelderland), there are far less real dialect speakers. Maybe this
is because in those areas, dialects of Dutch are spoken, and not seperate
languages such as Low Saxon. I also lived in the Achterhoek, the Eastern
part of Gelderland where Low Saxon dialects are spoken, and there quite a
lot of people spoke that language as well, much more than in parts of the
same province with dialects of Dutch.

I wonder how that is in Germany, are there still towns to be found where
most people under 40 years old do speak Low Saxon?

Groeten
Ingmar

PS: Have you become a man because of the water, Orville, or do you just
live close to the sea ? ;-)

Carry on, Ingmar, with your Drents in the land of the Hunebedden!

Yesterday I went to Drenthe, to a reunion of my primary school in the town
where I grew up. Most of my old class mates I hadn't seen for over 25
years, that was real fun! But I was happily surprised as well to find out
that the common language still turned out to be Low Saxon: almost everyone
spoke Drenthe dialect instead of Dutch. Even the teacher and a local
journalist who kind of lead the gathering later on, who were both
originally from Friesland and raised in Frisian, spoke Low Saxon. The
journalist did even ask in the beginning: shall I speak Dutch or just
Drentish, I assume the last, as usual. So there is still hope for our
language, because we were all below 40 yrs old (except for the teacher of
course and that journalist). I hadn't really expected that.
