Beste Pat,

Does anyone else recall a police procedural series from the late 1970s or
early 1980s which was a series of separate stories from German, Dutch and
British police forces?  I may well have the nationalities wrong.

I remember a fair number of animations (Magic Roundabout being the greatest
of them, but some of the Czech animations were marvellous) from my childhood
(late 1960s/early 1970s).  All were, of course, dubbed.  I did grow up
knowing that there was great television in other languages, but I don't know
how I knew.

Same here. I remember very good movies for children back when I was a child
myself, and usually they were made in the DDR, Czechoslovakia or other
Warsaw-pact-countries.
A few years later I had the pleasure of watching "Die Rote Kapelle" on TV, a
series about spies, building a network in Belgium. I now wonder if we then
got to see the Eastern German or the Western German version. Colditz was
also great back then.

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx

Luc asked

What about Britain: has a continental series ever been aired?

I cannot recall BBC having any such series but in the 1970's they had a
detective series set in Amsterdam (can't recall the name but it had a catchy
tune).
And of course they also made a great Maigret series but both were of British
origin.
Here in Australia our SBS TV (Special Broadcasting Service) has presented
many European Continental series including the superb Derrick. Of course
Komissar Rex
after catching all the crooks in Vienna has moved to Rome. Great Service
all round with News in many languages and movies from around the globe.
Even a couple of long running Brazilian Soapies that were so bad they had a
cult following here. Politicians have tried closing the Service down in the
name of
Economic Rationalism but public pressure forced them to back down as it did
with Ethnic Radio stations.
