This one is in UTF-8 encoding.

Folks,

I wrote:

Pardon me for sending this issue twice, once (4a) with UTF-8 encoding and
once (4b) in "Use default text encoding for outgoing messages". Perhaps this
will tell us something since Hanne's Low Saxon message below contains
bunches of "special" characters.

OK, the results of my little test are weird and wonderful, and I can't
exactly say what happened there. But I guess we are a step closer to a
solution.

Both versions arrived in my private box with the "special characters" as
desired. This is strange because version 4a is no different from previous
postings with which we did have this problem. (Did simply "fiddling" with
the setting remove a blip in the system?)

When I checked them in our archive, lo and behold, 4a had gobbledygook (in
my default Western encoding) but was OK when I changed the encoding view
mode to UTF-8. With 4b it was the other way around. This makes sense. What I
do not know is what happens with more "exotic" characters, such as IPA and
"oriental" ones.

So here's a test:

IPA:
dæɪ ˄tuːƒũkruˑpɚ hɑˑziˑˈnʏst ɪnt ˈvɒːŋˌɕɣʏːɚ || ɪns vasn̩dɜˌbɑˑɪdˈolnˑ
ˈuˑtˌfloːgƒŋ | zæɪvolˑn dæɪ ˈjʊŋː vatˑɐʊˌfoˑɚn kriːgƒŋ ʊnhɑːʁndæɪ ˌlʏɪ̆cən
liːfəˈlæɪ̃ˑlɒˑtn̩ ||

Chinese:
花間一壺酒。

獨酌無相親。

舉杯邀明月。

對影成三人。

Sanskrit:
तपःस्वाध्यायनिरतं तपस्वी वाग्विदां वरम् ।

नारदं परिपप्रच्छ वाल्मीकिर्मुनिपुङ्गवम् ॥

Ideally – and I may be naïve here – we would like to send everything to the
Listserv in UTF-8 and come out all right. I wonder if Susan and her crew can
change the default view mode of the online archives to UTF-8 (such as by
specifying "<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=utf-8" /> in the template).

P.S.:
Susan just responded:

 That's weird - the 'default' (b) one looks great in the archives, but the
UTF-8 one doesn't. I'll keep looking at this. I wonder how it looks to the
subscribers...
