In northern German, "daddeln" also means to use a keyboard in a random way
-- a gaming machine is often called "Daddelautomat" or "Daddelkasten", and
"Du daddelst bloß auf der Tastatur rum" means "You sit at your computer
doing nothing to the purpose."

I always thought "daddeln" was onomatopoeia :-)

Subject: Etymology

"Dawdle" appeared in writing as late as in the late 18th century. It is
believed to be dialectical and a variant of "daddle" (to walk totteringly
and unsteadily, like a small child), perhaps influenced by "daw" (as in the
bird *Corvus monedula*) and its extension "silly fellow, simpleton, noodle,
fool."
