I like to think of it as being "just politics as usual, but with a slightly
different cast this time round".  (One of the things that irritates me
hugely
with the discussion of this sort of historical event, is how things get so
polarized so quickly - the people who were colonized had their own separate
sets of interests, and sometimes they coincided with those of the
colonizers.)

Most of the people who get colonized are busy having (to them) monstrously
big
wars and conflicts amongst themselves, and they tend to see the colonizers
as
Yet Another Asset to help beat down their local enemies, only to realize,
far
too late, that they've become just another asset themselves.
