Hi Paul:

I took “Black English” at the University of Texas – Austin in the mid-80s.
Dr. John Baugh taught the course. He later went on to teach at Stanford. I
believe he still teaches there. He got his doctorate at the University of
Pennsylvania studying under Dr. Lebov (if I remember the name correctly).

Subject: Mark,

It's William Labov, an American who is considered the founder of
variationist sociolinguistics. He studied under Uriel Weinreich (who is only
one year older than he), the son of the famous Yiddishist Max Weinreich, the
one that coined the phrase "A language is a dialect with an army and a
navy" ("אַ שפראַך איז אַ דיאַלעקט מיט אַן אַרמײ און פֿלאָט", "a shprakh iz a
dialekt mit an armey un flot").
