Lowlanders,

Below is my exchange with Hanne about “The Crypt”, our new “scary” Web
series:

Hi Ron,

you help me, I can't find the word "WRAITHIKE" in my dictionary.

Thanks.

Subject: Etymology

Hi, Hanne!

"Wraithlike" or "wraith-like" means something like "ghostly", thus
gespenstisch. It's quite old-fashioned.

I should add to this that the “old-fashioned” choice is quite deliberate,
also in the case of the phrase “most uncanny”. It is supposed to connote
that the whole thing isn’t meant to be (totally) serious, that it is a bit
tongue in cheek (*nicht ganz ernst gemeint*), which isn’t necessarily to say
that “supernatural” phenomena are totally out of the question. It’s a bit
like suddenly putting on a Count Dracula voice.

For most people, scary stories have amusement value. It tends to be the
element of “It isn’t true … *is* it?” and the thought “What if …?” that most
people find entertaining.

Enjoy, my pretties … if you dare!
