Dear Lowlanders,

I made the following announcement yesterday:


Please join me in congratulating our Marlou Lessing on winning the first
prize in this year’s Low Saxon literature contest “Vertell doch mal” (this
year with the topic “Hartpuckern” [“Beating of the Heart” = “High Anxiety” -
my translation])! Her short story “Buten Finster” (“From the Window” - my
translation) is set in the Nazi period and tells how a little girl protects
her parents from the Gestapo.



And Marlou responded telling us that the text of her work is available in
PDF form at her website www.vertelln.de.

Hanne just drew my attention to a website at which you can listen to the
story if you click on the “video” (i.e. picture with audio) at the top
(entitled Vertell doch mal: 1. Platz: "Buten Finster"). Dank di, Hanne!

Again, congratulations, Marlou! I’m very impressed by the story, especially
by the way you transitioned from strident (“High”) German to mellow Low
Saxon as a representation of the emergence of the Gestapo officer’s
humanity. Well done!
