Regarding Heiko's point:

This change is hard for me to understand. A change from t to tz to s
(Hochdeutsche Lautverschiebung) is easy to follow, especially with the
aspirated t that we have here in North Germany. But from s/z to r or back is
quite a stretch.



You gave us the benefit of your thoughts:

Delightful! I cannot call to mind a better metaphor for language than the
braided streams of some sun-soaked river delta, merging & separating but
always moving. What exercises me most is musing over the properties held in
common by each stream of dialect & language, even more than those that are
distinctive. I have a half-fearful feeling that I could lose myself in such
contemplation. I rather think I share this with our Marlou...
