Hi Hanne, Ron, Dick and the rest

So Hanne you said you could understand Dick Low Saxon dialect from the
Netherlands quite well...

Actually you should, of course, because Low Saxon both in Germany as in the
Netherlands is supposed to be one language.

But there are many varieties of Low Saxon within the Netherlands which are
quite different already from eachother.

I wonder which of our dialects here is easiest to understand for our
language mates of Germany.

You heard Dick's version already, which is more or less the same as the
dialect of the village I grew up in, and which has in phonological and
other aspects quite a lot of Dutch influence.

The other two below are one Achterhook variety and one North Drenthe
(Groningen) variety, the former quite close to Westphalian, the latter to
East Frisian Low Saxon.

Hi, Ingmar!

In my opinion, much depends on which of the dialects of Northern Germany
one is familiar with. Speakers of Münsterland/Westphalian varieties would
have fewer problems with those of Drenthe and Twente. Speakers of northern
varieties (and Hanne's dialect is a link between them and the northeastern
ones) would have the least degree of problems with the ones of Groningen,
especially speakers of of the northwestern dialects which have Frisian
substrata in common with Groningen. Unfortunately we have no audio file for

But, of course, there are two basic language barriers along the national
border:

   1. Dutch versus German influences*
   2. Dutch- versus German-based orthographies

*Fewer Germans are familiar with Dutch than Netherlanders are familiar with
German.
