Russian has pochemu and zachem, the former inquiring into the reason for a
past action and zachem the motivation for an anticipated action. At least
that's what the books say.
I checked my sense of meaning for Why, How come, and What for and can't
come up with a distinction.
Why did you do that? What did you do that for? How come you did that?
Why are you flying to Boston? What are you flying to Boston for? How come
you are flying to Boston?
How come is quite colloquial and familiar.
