Subject: LL-L Language variation

Social pressure squeezes speakers of regional variants in a corner, take
this guy (who is a contestor in the UK X Factor competition) who was
invited to sing the "Flower of Scotland" for the soccer game Scotland USA this
Friday evening:

He got a lot of negative comments, not only on severa blogs on the web, but
even on the BBC:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/rugby-union/24965364
** quote: "Some guy called Nicholas McDonald is belting out Flower of
Scotland. Apparently he is an X Factor contestant. He's got that Glasgow
pub warble in his vocals, but at least we could hear him, although that
might be because of the lack of fans at Hampden!" endquote **
"*That Glasgow pub warble in his vocals*" is apparently irritating.
So there is a quite strong social pressure to conform to the use of
standard language and pronounciation.
Regards,
Roger
