<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I was in a shop this afternoon and I saw a new book
out. I think it was called "Scots speak" and it is an analyses of Urban
Scots accents ( Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen ). It has a CD ROM of
people speaking and a transcript of what they are saying - with a break down and
analyses of their pronunciation. It looked very interesting. I didn't have time
to take the details or buy it - but is anyone is interested I can find out. They
said they were thinking mostly of drama so people can study the accents of urban
Scots dialects. I looked at the Edinburgh on most as that is the one that I am
most interested in - and it looks very reflective of true Edinburgh Scots. It
had four people from Edinburgh speaking. One of them was an old guy and he is
using some more "obsolete" Scots and they also had a younger guy speaking and it
was really very true to what I hear often ( I only managed to look at the
transcript and haven't had the chance to hear the recording.) - it looks good as
it is genuine Scots as it is spoken in the Cities and shows the difference in
pronunciation between them - which you don't get from just reading a book - and
shows that it is still a live and active language in daily use.</FONT></DIV>
