re plummy accents

This is a fact not an affectation.!!!!!
When my husband was working on a TV program with the Army, he was shown
real 'plums' - which rather in the manner of Prof Higgins in My Fair Lady -
were
stones the size of small plums.
Any officer had to be able to give an order capable of being heard across
a parade ground WITH the plums in his mouth; they had to practise and practise
until they were able to speak first, then shout and then bellow.
How they did it without swallowing them as per Eliza Doolittle! I don't
know but apparently it was de rigeur for officer training until post 1st WW and
perhaps gave rise to the strangulated sounds one associates with officers
of that ( and later) periods?
