stupidity, insanity, or whatever) has a lot of these idiomatic

<div style="direction: ltr;"><span class="sg"> I've noticed this too, and it seems to apply to most European languages.  I wonder if it's because mental deficiency, drunkenness and death are (semi-)tabooed.  The former two are often used to refer to people behind their backs, or outside what is hoped to be earshot, and creative rephrasing may go back to a security device.  Or these expressions were simply designed to put a humorous spin on negative conditions.  Or both ...
