interessant! Dan zou dat woord ontleend zijn aan het Germaans voordat
de Wet van Grimm in werking trad (dus ergens in het eerste millenium
voor onze jaartelling). Ik vraag me af of je in dat geval al van
Germaans kunt spreken. In ieder geval kunnen we de oorsprong van
_pelto_ bij een Indo-Europese taal zoeken, en dan misschien bij een
taal die later tot proto-Germaans zou leiden. </span><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">

De Indo-Europese taalgroep heeft al in een heel vroeg stadium contact
gehad met de Oeralische (waaronder de Finoegrische) taalgroep.
Germaanse leenwoorden komen weliswaar veel later voor. Gesteld dat
_pelto_ inderdaad proto-Germaans is, dan zou deze ontlening een
interessante uitzondering zijn. Want de oudste Indo-Europese wortels in
het Oeralisch en het Finoegrisch wijzen op contact met een typische
Satemtaal; hoogstwaarschijnlijk een Indo-Iraanse taal. Er zijn veel
aanwijzingen dat de Indo-Iraanse talen lang geleden
aan proto-Finoegrische talen grensden, en dat die vroeger veel
noordelijker gesproken werden dan thans Farsi en het Ossetisch als
noordelijke exponenten.</span><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Er
zijn enkele van dat soort zeer oude Indo-Iraanse woorden in de
Finoegrische talen te vinden, zoals porsas (varken), varsa (veulen),
mesi (honing), sata (honderd), taivas (hemel) en marras (dood). </span><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">

Er is in ieder geval een Proto-Indo-Europese wortel </span><em style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">*pel(e)-tu- </em><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">aan te wijzen, die tot de Germaanse _veld_-woorden geleid heeft.
