</a>> Subject: Events Folks, Those of you in the area of Washington State, Northern Oregon and Southwestern British Columbia might like to consider attending the 36th Spring Powwow hosted by the University of Washington Native American Student Organization. It is a so-called "intertribal" affair with participants from all over the US and Canada, often with Mexican visitors and once in a while with participants from otherwise less represented American polar regions and Northeastern Siberia.

If you have never attended a powwow you ought to give it a try, for this one is one of your more impressive ones.  It is the indoor "rival" of the outdoor one during SeaFair in June/July. There are ceremonies, dancing and druming competitions, and this can be really impressive, especially for novices. There is also a bazaar with all types of stuff for sale, and treasures can be found among trinkets, including music and language books and tapes.

Whenever "intertribal" dances are announced, <span style="font-style: italic;">anyone may participate, and people that aren't Native Americans are considered belonging to their own respective tribes, are thus welcome.  These dances  (which require no skill, just glorified walking in a circle) are meant less for beauty than for social symbolism, a display of unity and mutual support. There tend to be collections for student scholarships and the awarding of such.  Occasionally, newly wed couples are honored: they walk in a circle holding open a blanket, and whoever cares to do so throws some money into it.

<br><br>You are allowed to take photographs and videos, and I do recommend bringing your cameras, also sound recorders.  However, there are moments when you should not take photoraphs and videos, namely during certain solemn ceremonies.  The rule of thumb is "Don't shoot while everyone stands."

Whatever food will be offered for sale is neither plentiful nor healthful, nor in any way wonderful.  So have a meal beforehand, or eat some packed food there (which is perfectly fine and normal). Tso, this is a nice opportunity for doing some "Lowlands spying," namely to listen to the various English accents, which usually requires some eavesdropping.  You will also hear indigenous languages spoken.

Most Native Americans attending (and they are in the majority) use these events for their main purpose: meeting.  So, among the spectators there is a lot of meet-and-greet going on, and it's great to observe social customs, family interaction and styles of tribal fineries.

<br><br>This year's Spring Powwow will begin this afternoon and will end on Sunday evening.  On Saturday and Sunday it runs pretty much all day long.<br><br>Try to make it for at least one of the "Grand Entries," because they are very impressive.  These are scheduled as follows:

Friday (April 13): 7 pm (general) Saturday (April 14): 1 pm (Coastal Tribes), 7 pm (general) Sunday (April 15): 7 pm (general) The venue is the Hec Edmunson/Bank of America Pavilion (basketball arena) just north of the football stadium, a short walk from the Medican Center.
