<br>it was founded, but about ten or eleven years ago, I was invited to what<br>I think was a committee meeting of the group that ran the list. I then<br>didn't meet anyone for another five or six years, when I happened to say
<br>to someone 'I''m going to Oxford next weekend' and they said 'Let's meet<br>up!'.<br><br>And there were from time to time mutterings on the list that we 'should<br>meet up', but nothing happened until one man said 'look, I am going to
<br>be in this bar on this evening, and if anyone wants to join me, please<br>do'. So a meeting happened. That group has met, at first irregularly,<br>but now we seem to be proposing a first-friday-of-the-Quarter pattern so
<br>that our far-flung friends can plan their holidays and business trips<br>around our meeting. And then about a year ago, people in the North and<br>the South West began grumbling that 'all the meetings are in London',
<br>and they were told : you can have a meeting - all it takes is the name<br>of a pub and a date - but for a long time they didn't believe it! But<br>_eventually_ someone in both areas called a meeting!<br><br>I think there are numerous barriers to 'real' meetings - some people
<br>think there must be a Chairman and Minutes, some people think 'I like<br>listening to conversations, but I don't feel I have anything to<br>contribute', or 'My English / LS / whatever isn't good enough' or 'I am
<br>ok at writing about these things where I can go away and think about it<br>and look things up, but I wouldn't be able to hold my own among all the<br>experts!' Or 'I wouldn't want to go to all the trouble and expense of
<br>going to a meeting, only to find that I didn't like it'. What if<br>Lowlands-l is all a front for mad axemen looking for potential victimes,<br>and I never see my family again?<br><br>All that is fair enough (apart from the mad axemen bit! - really, you
<br>think we'd kill you???). Perhaps Marcel, Ron and I should plan to meet<br>up in NYC at some point? Perhaps anyone stopping by in London (or<br>Woking!) would like to drop me a line, and if I'm around, we could meet
<br>up, inviting in anyone else who happens to be passing or living nearby.<br>If it works it works, if it doesn't, it doesn't. Perhaps I should send<br>my itinary for the next few months, and if anyone wants to meet up in

This doesn't mean we can't have crazy feasting, carousing and dancing as well, does it? I'm still fancying the promised lazy summer afternoon tea on Heather's lawn with ripe stone fruit falling on our heads. (I'd make my famous "plum pizza" and participate in croquet or even cricket!)
