Subject: Orthography<br>
<br>
Dear Lowlanders,<br>
<br>
Have you noticed a relatively recent trend toward spelling "a lot" as
one word ("alot"), though not yet in formal print? <br>
<br>
Whilst I have seen spelled like that in any context (e.g., "we bought <u>alot</u>
of stuff), I noticed that this spelling is used for when the word functions as
an adverb (e.g., "I like it <u>alot</u><i><span style="font-style: italic;">,"
"</span></i> thanks <u>alot</u>," "they went to the beach <u>alot</u>").<br>
<br>
Does this mean that the word is being reanalyzed as a single word, as has
happened to "however," "nevertheless,"
"whatsoever," etc.? <br>
<br>
Regards,<br>
Reinhard/Ron</span></font></p><font size="2"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">----------</span><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">

Sounds like Microsoft or OpenOffice have known about this for a while,<br>then!<br><br>I've never heard of "a lot" as being typed or thought of as one word, I<br>always think of it as two, even though I use the phrase a lot in both
