<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Subject: LL-L
"Etymology"</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Elsie, you mention
'allemaskie', 'allemintig' & 'allemapstieks' as interjections without
bearing much on their actual nature. People, she is referring to what the
English used to indulge in as 'minced oaths' as from people unwilling to take
the Lord's name in vain ('Allemagtig' - 'Almighty'). The people from Kanon
Eiland eastward were not only inventive users of their language, but they also
used it courtously, when it was proper to do so. Did this practice hold sway in
other Lowlands Language circles, & how did they mince it?</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">They were not the only ones. My
Grandmother came from Riebeek Wes, & when she was sorely tried she used
'Allemapstics!' & warned us off it too, for (as she told us) that was what
it was, like 'Zounds!' or 'Gadzooks'. Of course that only made us keener to use
it.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Yrs,</div>
