contribute the Afrikaans plural for an egg? Notwithstanding that we use the
maxim, 'Vir 'n appel en 'n ei - 'for an apple and an egg' where the English use
'sold for a song'; our conventional singular for 'egg' is the Nederlands
plural 'eier', & our plural is 'eiers'. This is one of the many reasons why
I am convinced that the core of Afrikaans-speakers at the genesis of the Tongue
were not themselves native speakers of Nederlands.</font></div>

<div><font size="2">As for 'trap' / 'stair' I don't differ with Ron,
but it will cause difficulties. For people who need to build or use one step up
to another level, the term 'stair' or 'trap' is very useful, & of course
those who build or use many must needs go to the plural 'stairs' or
'trappe'.</font></div>
<div><font size="2">As for a 'f'light of stairs'. this is to my mind
part & parcel with the English flight of fancy with all manner of collective
nouns, ...a pride of lions, a litigation of lawyers, a gaggle of geese, a
something (who can tell me?) of apes & a murder of crows... well,
well.</font></div>
