sassisch@yahoo.com</a>></span><br style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Subject: Names<br><br>Dear Lowlanders,<br><br>At a social gathering last night I had an interesting conversation with a Norwegian lady. (Incidentally, when she learned that I understand Norwegian she switched to it and I was surprised that after all these years I was still able to hold a conversation in partly "faked" Norwegian, 
i.e. Dano-Norwegian in part lexically and phonologically adapted from Danish, often ending up with something approaching "Inter-Scandinavian.")  With family ties in and around Bergen, the lady was very interested in the Hanseatic connection and in the Lowlands in general.
<br><br>Eventually she asked me what the origin of her surname might be, because rumor has it that it was from what people referred to as "Holland."  The name is Grung.  She and I half suspect that it may be related to Groningen (which originally was Low-Saxon- and Frisian-speaking of course.)  I promised her to run the question by my fellow Lowlanders and to let her know if there are any substantial leads.
